Camping - Dutch Oven

Have you heard about cooking recipes for camping with a dutch oven? Dutch ovens are a traditional tool for camping expeditions, and there are plenty of reasons why.

A Dutch oven is versatile and capable of standing up to a lot of abuse. It can be used as a stewpot, oven, and even a frying pan in a pinch. If you're interested in cooking over the fire, a good quality Dutch oven on legs is probably the right choice. Its thick walls and tight cover allow for frying, braising, boiling, roasting and baking. If you look, you can find plenty of great recipes for camping. Dutch oven cooking is easy and a lot of fun.

Upside down cake is a great choice for Dutch oven camp cookery. Just grease the inside of the Dutch oven thoroughly, including the lid. Place cherries or pineapple slices in the bottom, and pour in a packet of prepared white or yellow cake mix. Place the oven over a layer of hot embers and add the lid. Now, carefully space a few more coals on top. Bake half an hour to an hour, testing the cake with a knife to see if it's finished. Upend onto a plate, allow to cool, and enjoy!

Of course dessert isn't all a Dutch oven has to offer. Filling meals you can make in one of these useful containers include stews, chilis and roasts.

One easy one-dish meal starts with braising meat or other protein in water over hot coals. When the meat is tender, add your preferred stew vegetables and some delicious seasonings. Potatoes, carrots, celery and onions are old favorites, and salt, pepper, basil and other herbs are often used to season the pot. Cook until everything is done throughout, then serve. You'll get plenty of energy, as well as a filling meal.

You can even use a Dutch oven to make bacon and eggs in the morning. Cook the bacon first, just as you would in a skillet, then fry the eggs in the fat leftover from the bacon. You'll have to be a little more careful with your spatula, but the results are just as good as they would be in a frying pan.

There are lots of great recipes for camping using Dutch oven techniques. Spend a little time doing some research, then enjoy the delicious results. You'll be amazed by how easy it is, and how little equipment you really need in your outdoor kitchen.
