You don’t have to give up your coffee when you go camping. Whether you decide to make it cowboy style, or choose one of the more modern camping coffee pot options, you’ll be able to enjoy a nice hot cup of java while you watch the scenery. Many of us don’t like giving up our coffee, and a good coffee pot is the best way to avoid having to.

The next technological step beyond the saucepan full of coffee grounds is the percolator. This relatively simple type of camping coffee pot can be used over the fire, and forces boiling water up through a tube and into the ground. Look for a bail handle and remember to use a hot pad with any pot you’re going to put over the fire. Percolators make a strong, slightly bitter pot of coffee due to the use of boiling water, and produce a drink similar to the kind your grandmother might have made. Some people dislike this taste, but others prefer it.

You can also find drip machines what work on an ordinary camping stove and which make a full sized pot of coffee. You’ll need to bring filters or buy a pot with a reusable filter if you choose this type. Drip machines will heat water for other purposes, and make coffee that’s just like what you’re used to.

French or vacuum presses are a great idea for making coffee when you’re camping, too. They make excellent coffee, whether you’re home or camping, and they don’t require you to buy a special coffee pot. No batteries or outlet is required - just coffee and hot wayer. Place your grounds into the press and add the water, then replace the lid. Wait till the coffee is as strong as you like it and push the plunger down to separate the grounds from the coffee.

You can find several different kinds of this coffee maker. Traditionally, they’re made from glass, but this can be a problem when you go out into the wilderness. Fortunately, there are metal and insulated types as well. These make better camping coffee pots than glass varieties. This kind of coffee maker comes in sizes anywhere from personal to a standard full sized pot, depending on how many you need to serve and how much coffee you prefer.
